the esata station will provide your systemfiles through the e3 flasher. your flasher is a gateway for your hdd.
so in short if you want to use your ps3 you need an e-sata station

any e-sata station will do as long as you have the right cable to connect it to the flasher

You can downgrade with no HDD I believe, but you'd have to uninstall the e3 and put the hdd back in after.
