You will have to connect it to your PC and format to fat32 and then reinstall it on your PS3 (correct me if I am wrong anyone) and the FW isn't stored on the HDD but on the FLASH, and if your PS3 isn't on 3.55 you will have to downgrade with a flasher if that's the case I have a downgrade service if you would like to take a look;You must login or register to view this content. or you can get the hardware and downgrade it; it will require disassembly of your PS3!

You don't have to format the HDD first. You just have to re-install whatever OFW/CFW you had on when you plug it in.
Seeing that it's asking you to install 4.41 or higher, this means your PS3 was already on OFW/CFW 4.41.
If you were on Rebug 4.41, re-install Rebug 4.41. If you were on OFW, re-install OFW 4.41.
Any OFW above 3.55 requires hardware downgrading before you can install CFW.
