If you are on 3.55+, you will need a E3 flasher to downgrade the PS3. There are tutorials on NGU on how to downgrade and stuff :p

You don't need the HDD connected while downgrading with the e3 flasher. But, you haven't answered the question " what model number your PS3?"
Reason being not all FATS have NOR chip and the e3 flasher is only compatible with only NOR PS3s.

If you need help taking the Ps3 apart there are many youtube videos on how to open the ps3. Also, many videos on how to use the e3 flasher.
