Why use FTP to transfer to your external..? Just plug your external HDD into your PC and copy it over

is your external on FAT32? Cause i had the exact same problem, FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB. Anything bigger than that it won't copy/download onto. THE PS3s support NTFS? Format your external to that, and it works.
