If you're above the 3.55 fw and your PS3 came out before 2010-ish, you can use a $40 service, or flash the PS3 yourself, to downgrade the PS3. The process of downgrading involves taking the PS3 apart, and maybe soldering. I'm sure you can find experienced people willing to help you flash your PS3. But if your PS3 is not compatable for the downgrade, you can always turn to Optical Drive Emulator or ODE, like Cobra or Matrix. You won't get as many features, but you will get limited homebrew and the ability to play downloaded games, as long as they're in .iso format. Again, I've never gone through these processes, so I'm going off from what i've heard or seen.
