Haxor!
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Sorry, title should have read How to: Jailbreak when you're on OFW 4.70 I put mod by mistake.
**Disclaimer**
I DO NOT claim to be an expert in any field of modding, jailbreaking, hacking, etc. I have jailbroken a couple systems and when I ran into issues it was difficult to find help without asking. This is just my experience.

Likely, if you aren't using a jailbroken system now you are probably on OFW 4.70. There are a ton of tutorials and videos about how to take apart your system and install the E3 Flasher. I will assume that you have looked at the videos and read the posts about that. Here is the video that I mostly used and it worked just fine from 4.66. If you're on 4.66, follow the video and you should have no issues!

In that video he provides links to downloads but because of it's age it doesn't include 4.70. Thanks to Dirty Smasher here on NGU, he led me in the direction to get the following NOR Patcher by Darkjiros:

Originally I tried with a 4.66 patcher on a 4.70 NOR dump and I got an error message on the PS3 after writing to the NOR chip. The error said something to the effect of the system not being able to run and that I needed to install 4.70 to run. Because I made backups I was able to rewrite the NOR chip to it's original state. *phew!* Once I did this and rebooted the system it loaded up to the normal XMB screen.

Now, you've made your backups (because you're careful) and you're ready to patch your .bin file. The next step tripped me up the first time because it was different than the last time. Copy your bkpps3.bin to the folder containing your patcher, then drag the .bin file on top of the .exe. If you open the .exe alone you will get an error and it will exit. Once you drop the .bin on to the .exe file your file will be patched automatically. The screen will tell you to press a key to exit. Go back to the folder where your original .bin was and you'll see a new file called bkpps3_NOR_patched.bin. Copy this file to your micro sd card root. Once it's on the card then you need to rename the file to bkpps3.bin then write it to your nor chip. I'm assuming that if and when Sony updates again, you will need to find the updated patcher. The rest of the process is the same to install your CFW from there.

One of the other issues I had (only with the second machine) was once I installed the E3 and plugged the system in; it wouldn't turn on. The system would go from off (red light), push the power button and it's on (green light) then about 2 seconds after I got a quick yellow light with 3 beeps then a flashing red light. Everything pointed to a hardware problem and forums were discussing reballing, baking, etc. I was surprised because it was working fine prior to this. I decided to put everything back into the metal case (without the BluRay) and see if it would turn on, which it did. I don't know why, maybe someone knows, but I'm not that someone. My first PS3 didn't require this step.

When I was checking the original .bin dump file in a tool called PS3DumpChecker it would give an error message. It said (ERROR: Your dump failed on 1 of 140 Checks. Please check the log for more information! The error is in the ROS0 Hash check. I assume it has something to do with how 4.70 looks in the system. Again, I'm no expert. I read that if you open up the settings in the checker and disable the option that reads: "Enable hash checks" then you can recheck and get an OK result. My first "dump" didn't work and I had 144 errors. I had to reseat the clip on the NOR chip. Be careful when dismissing any errors.

This is a hell of a read and I didn't intend it to be but if it helps even one person then I'm happy with that.
