Post: Modding Slim PS3 3.4 - where to begin?

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Hey dudes. There are literally hundreds of guides and all I need to know is which ones would be the best for my case. Detailed responses would be awesome, but even sending me some correct and relevant links (in the best order preferred, like you wouldn't tell someone to wear their socks after tying their shoe laces) would make me a happy camper.

I bought myself a slim PS3. The guy never went online on it, still has the OFW 3.4 on it. Most of the guides here involve downgrading on the first step, but I can skip that since it's below OFS 3.55. I'm new to modding on the PS3, but I've done it on the Wii and NDS. Now, how can I go about modding my slim PS3?

Some specific questions:

1. Can I install the latest CFW straight from OFW 3.4 or do I have to upgrade to OFW 3.55 first? If yes, where can I find a valid LEGIT/TRUSTED download?

2. What's the best CFW I can get at this point?

3. I also want to be able to access PSN, not necessary to play online, but I bought games I want to download. Is this part of the firmwire I should be choosing or how to go about this, and at what step of the modding process? (Also which do you recommend, PSNpatch or SEN Enabler? Or some of the newer posts talk about spoofing CID and ps3ita, how do I do that?)

4. Should I be installing something called Toggle QA and enabling QA flag or whatever after? Where is the most relevant guide for this?

5. Which game manager would you guys recommend and where can I grab a legitimate, virus free download or link to a trusted guide?

6. Anything else you'd recommend me downloading or doing after all this?

If someone can help me out so I can take the right steps and not screw things up, then a big thanks to you!

1. I believe you have to update to 3.55 OFW before you can install a CFW

2. For CEX I would recommend Habib 4.70 or Rebug 4.65.2 REX. For DEX I recommend Ps3ita 4.65

3. I run PSNPatch every time before I go online to spoof my CID

4. You only have to toggle your QA if you downgrade with a 999 downgrader

5. Game managers I use:
Webman (is pre-installed on Habib 4.70)
Multiman (is a .PKG)

6. I would also recommend CCAPI to RTM.

1. Alright, fair enough.
2. I've heard CEX is like a light version of DEX. So going with DEX Ps3ita 4.65 would be my best option, then?
3. So I can legitly download from my account as long as a spoof with PSNPatch?
4. Cool, one less thing to do! Wasn't sure what QA was for even, just read it in multiple guides recommending it.
5. Is multiman still updated?
6. What is CCAPI to RTM is used for?

Thanks for the awesome tips!

2. CEX is standard CFW that is based off the original OFW to allow you to run unsigned code by Sony. DEX is a developer firmware that mostly game developers use to test and create games on. If you don't plan on actually creating mods / applications for your PS3, I suggest that you stay on CEX.

3. As long as you use PSNPatch and remove any history of you running any homebrew apps, you should be relatively safe to access PSN and download your games. Understand that there is always a chance of getting banned when going online, regardless if you go mod a game or not.

4. If you ever plan on possibly downgrading your cfw to 3.55 again or to a lower cfw than the current one you have installed, I recommend you installing the Toggle QA flag since it will allow your PS3 to ignore the version of the firmware you are trying to install.

5. Last time Multiman was updated was for 4.65 back in January. Multiman is good if you are plannning on going on a standard cfw with no cobra, although since most new firmwares being released have cobra integrated, I suggest using webman.

6. CCAPI is application that will allow you to access game memory so you can mod on / offline. Its mostly used by CEX users as DEX users have TMAPI which was made officially by Sony. There is a new opensource alternative to CCAPI called PS3MAPI although I haven't seen many people create compatible tools for it yet.
