e3 flasher is not the best. it cant flash nand!
the cheapest and most versatile solution is to get a teensy++2 then get the tsop clips (360 clip etc) for the nand and nor chips if you can actually find any. other wise you will be soldering to the test points on nor mainboards and the chip legs themselves on nands.
the software side of things is taken care of by either flow rebuilder or ps3 nand/nor tool/patcher and some specially made python software called norway and nandway to control the teensy and the firmware for the teensy itself is included with this sofware. all open source.
there is a handy piece of software called downgrade tool ps3 v1.03, which has images for the soldering requirements and pinouts of the teensy and can do all the reading and writing to the chips with patching for downgrade.
basically what you do is read the chip(s) off the ps3, then modify a few hex bytes in the firmware code to either allow a fsm dongle to work or allow a non ofw pup to be installed and flash the firmware back to the chip(s) then install the cfw.

There is no way a Teensy 2.0 ++ & the 48Pin 360 TSOP clip is cheaper than a E3 flasher
Plus there is some solder work to do to make a Teensy downgrade tool.
Only fat ps3's have nand, you will buy all the crap to downgrade a fat nand then it will get ylod of something, i know teensy does nor to but its not worth the hassle
Easer if you just do nor downgrades with a e3.
Date codes of slims that can be downgraded with E3...
