I cant access the recover/saftey mode because it still does the update. I cant even get on to the xmb screen. thanks.

i had to use a different hdd to get out of it then switched back to the old hdd

How do i do that

Take out the hard drive then turn on the PS3. Once prompted with a msg slide the hard drive back in, plug in the USB stick with a different CFW (or the same 1 you were running before it did this) in and press start and select then it will install and reboot.

I'd recommend you to just format your hard drive.

i literally had to get a spare hdd and update it on that, but if you really couldn't wait formatting the hdd (must have external casing) with a pc would work again but delete all your stuff

How do i format my hard drive

put the hdd in a pc then use windows disk manager to set partitions format etc.
