1. Turn off Playstation3.
2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.
Once you're into that reinstall your firmware from there.

He stated he gets black screen still going into recovery mode
Long shot but try resetting video settings.
1) Hold down button until it bleeps twice then let go
EDIT: if that does not work then I suggest removing the HDD and reformatting it, then putting it back in to let the PS3 format to FAT32 again. It should then either install the FW from the board (current FW) or prompt you to install a firmware 2.XX, 3.XX-55 or higher (the original FW the PS3 came with) make sure its disconnected from the internet in this process and that there is no disk in the tray
It probably wont work in your scenario, it basically just reformatting the drive externally and it needs to be in a PC to do it. Should just go with a reflash if nothing else succeeds
