You have to have a wired connection from your laptop (or pc), to your router and then to your ps3

You mean ethernet from the router to the ps3 and another ethernet from the router to the computer. Also you can have wireless from the router and just have a ethernet from the computer hooked to the ps3, but this way requires a network bridge.
