1 - $425.00 is way too much. There are consoles for $150-$200 out there.
2 - Well depends on what you are trying to do.
3 - Yes i would recommend to have a working computer at home.

You can buy some off of craigslist or eBay. Try buying a 3.55 OFW and then you can just update to 3.55 CFW and then go to any 4.xx CFW you would like.
