I applied new arctic thermal 5 paste to my CPUs on my PS3 to decrease temps. But it's done the complete opposite, I cleaned the old paste that came with the PS3 off and applied the new stuff I used a bit more than a pea size and spead it with a card.

what have I done wrong?

Hello,
It sounds like you did everything right to my understanding however did you put any on the heat sink? If you put a pea sized amount on the CPU and GPU and place the heat sink on top and push down it should spread some on the heat sink as well. Also it might help if you haven't already to increase your fan speed . Hope this helps!

You may not have seated the heatsink correctlly and/or used too much termal paste. Thermal paste is not as heat conductive as the heat sink itself and the using too much will actually reduce the efficency of the heat sink. It's purpose is fill the gaps where actual contanct does not occur.

You did not state the before and after temps which would be useful in helping you solve the issue.

You have used the worst method possible to spread the arctic 5, just leave it as it is and it will spread itself
