I don't understand why you would stick to 2.70 or 3.55. Once on one of them, upgrade to latest CFW. (4.75).

Honestly, there is no right or wrong to this question. Do whatever you want.
If you're going to be on Custom Firmware then obviously don't update.
If you just want to have fun playing legit, go ahead and update to the latest official firmware.
