Put a new hard drive in, the hard drive may have become corrupt. This is a pretty common thing when running into this problem. The motherboard is still good or it wouldn't go to safe mode.

Do you mean red screen of death RSOD??

Is your PS3 a fat CECH-L03 or CECH-M03 80gb or have you got a 200 series 120gb/160gb slim??

To fix your problem, you either get a new hard drive or if you have a mac with a sata station plug the harddrive into the mac sata and format it, that will get any corrupted files of the drive.
