My issue started with the screen freezing, then when I would power on the light would turn green then instantly shut off. I started with a new power supply but that was no help so I bought a new hard drive installed powered on and it stayed on. Says to connect controller, then when I connect it says to restart or install firmware of 3.40 or higher. But I have tried everything but it keeps saying no applicable data found.......What do I do??

I know it sounds silly but make sure you only have the usb with the update plugged into your ps3

so when it says press start and select on your controller unplug it straight away from the ps3

install new harddrive
reinstall 4.78dex
if it wont take it check your folder structure ie. PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

OK, I tried everyone's advice but still can't get it to take an update. When I turn it on with USB update connected and controller says to press PS button then the next screen says system software cannot be run correctly. If it cannot be restarted, the system partition of the system storage must be reformatted and you must reinstall the system software. So do I need to format the hard drive on the PC, mabe something else?

The USB you plugged in must be in FAT32 format, not NTFS.

1. Install the new hdd
2. Boot ps3 into recovery mode
3. Select option "restore ps3 system"

This will format the new hdd to your ps3
Afterwards you will be brought to a black screen asking for your last syscall (last cfw you had installed)

4. Download a downgrader (rogero or dex downgrader etc)
5. Rename the file to "PS3UPDAT.PUP" (no quotes)
6. On the root of a fat32 formatted usb flash drive, create a folder named "PS3"
7. Inside the "PS3" folder, create a folder named "UPDATE"
8. Inside the "UPDATE" folder, place your "PS3UPDAT.PUP"

Folder structure should be
fat32formattedflashdriveroot/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

9. Insert the flash drive into the right most usb port of the ps3
10. Follow prompt and install
11. Once you are on the downgrader, you are free to install a cfw of your choice.
