1. Put the PS1 disc into your PS3 and go to Multiman
2. Hover over the game and click TRIANGLE
3. Select Create an ISO
4. Select your External HDD which should be connected to your PS3 at this point (Make sure your External HDD is formatted to FAT32 so PS3 can read it)
5. After it's done scroll to the right on Multiman and go to the Retro section
6. You can eject the disc and you'll see it's still in the Retro section of Multiman
7. You can now play it through your External HDD

Then just go to wherever the ISO is and either create it on the External HDD or copy it to it.

Whoa whoa whoa! You mean with multiman we can play ps1/2 games through software emulation?! Our jail broken ps3s are now backwards compatible we just put in ps2 games and copy them to HD and that's it?! I'm so cheesed off that the OFW didn't bother doing this. I'm now anxiously looking forwarding to jail breaking my ps3.

Edit: I'm this angry...

afaik all ps3s can play ps1 games with built in emulation.

Ps2 is what you need cobra and software emulation for, unless you have a cecha01(actually has ps2 chip inside).
