Do I have to purchase the e3 card reader dongle or is it possible download the files I need to a USB stick? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

the files on a usb, and 4.78 Rebug is the easiest way, make a noBD mfw so you can access rebug toolbox to access cfw settings,or you can get in factory service mode just enable FSM in rebug tool box on any rebug firmware and have files on usb that can work too will most likely need noBD MFW to access without black screen though

Is the nobd cfw something I can download? Or something I have to make? What is a MFW?

there is a rebug 4.78 nobd for cex as for dex you might need to make with mfw builder i am forever patching noBD and RSOD bypass for my stuffed ps3, just look up rebug 4.78 nobd, i seen it on a JP site earlier today
