For starters, 4.80 Rebug is good for beginning. It's easy and compatible with most menus. But I wouldn't advise staying on it for a very long time. PS3ITA is great for advanced modders, that's the firmware I use.

Just update to whatever CFW you'd like. Normally. Of course make sure it's DREX.
