if you can't get it to rebuild,, you can try install a different cfw firmware on another hdd then try put the other one back in, if its asks you to format system then you will need to shut off console.

if this happens you will need to get a usb sata cord and plug it into you pc to get you data off hdd

Boot ps3 into recovery mode

Try option "restore file system"

Freeze?

Try option "restore ps3 system"
This will wipe everything (games, saves, etc) you wont lose your jailbreak but you will lose your firmware.

If it freezes, youll know your hdd has taken a dump and will need to be replaced with another 2.5" sata hdd.

Once you install the new hdd, boot ps3 into recovery mode and select option "restore ps3 system"
This will format the new hdd to your ps3.

Then you can either reinstall your cfw, or install a downgrader and then your cfw.

Let us know how it goes. If you need any more help, just ask.

I see. I'm not trying to step on your toes bro, just another dude trying to help out with something quick and clear. My suggestions dont void yours. If Op wants to try to save his data, yea of course go for it.

You won't be on ofw, you will just not have a firmware running. You will have to install it. As long as you never install an official sony firmware higher than 3.55, you won't lose your jailbreak.
If you are ever installing a firmware that is LOWER than the one you are currently on, then you must first install a downgrader firmware, and then the lower cfw. Hope that makes sense.

1. Install the new hdd into the ps3
2. Boot ps3 into recovery mode
3. select option "restore ps3 system"
This will format the hdd to the ps3 and wipe everything (games, saves, etc)
When it is finished, you will be brought to a black screen asking for your last syscall(last cfw installed)

How to install a cfw:
4. Download your cfw
5. Rename the file to "PS3UPDAT.PUP" (no quotes)
6. On the root of a fat32 formatted usb flash drive, create a folder named "PS3"
7. Inside the "PS3" folder, create a folder named "UPDATE"
8. Inside the "UPDATE" folder, place your "PS3UPDAT.PUP"

folder structure should be fat32formattedusbflashdriveroot/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

9. Insert the usb flash drive into the rightmost usb port of your ps3
10. Follow prompt and install
