I am thinking that someone has replaced the hard drive with a newer one ? if so could this stop me from downgrading my ps3 to 3.55 as when i search for 500gm ps3 slim it shows me only super slim and i know none of them can be downgraded to 3.55 so this has left me in a sticky confused spot, please help if you can !! i would really appreciate it ! thank you for reading.

Hard Drive capacity or whether the HDD is original or replaced has nothing to do with "downgradability" of the PS3.

Here on the downgrade list I have, it shows it should be 120 GB. However, it is possible to exchange hard drives in a PS3 and I am thinking that's what may have happened with your PS3. Hard drive size does not affect your downgradability, fortunately. You should be able to downgrade to 3.55 with an E3 Flasher as the minimum firmware that specific model can go to is 3.20 or 3.40, both of which are below 3.55. Good luck!
