(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); I have not seen it posted here but I can confirm that the 2 machines I have which are running 3.15 and pointing to the custom DNS address to bypass the update and login to PSN have been countermeasured by Sony and are no longer working.

Other forums and their members are confirming this. So this is what is going on. I can say with 99.99% accuracy that if you are using the 3.15 Bypass that you will not be able to log onto PSN and play online.

What was so bad about updating in the first place?

Its just the otheros feature, if you really wanted it that bad then you wouldn't updated at all.

I bought my machine with the other OS feature and it was advertised. One of the nice things about having the Other OS feature is that you now have Linux access to a very different kind of processor than the standard x86 processor. The x86 processor is your General purpose processor it does everything reasonably well. The Cell processor is highly specialized it does one thing excellent, Crunch numbers for graphics, That is why the US DOD and others have put these things together into a super computer clusters.

Running stuff like folding@home(yes it does it native without other OS is great on the PS3 and the following pulled from Folding@home's web site gives a good description of this.

he PS3 is a powerful system for scientific calculation. Its Cell processor has the potential to be very powerful. In many ways, the Cell (and therefore the PS3) sits in between GPU's and multi-core CPU's. It is more flexible than GPU's, but less flexible than CPU's in the calculations it can perform. Consequently, it is more powerful than CPU's, but less powerful than GPU's. In the balance between flexibility and speed, the Cell makes a natural middle path. Other benefits are the uniformity of PS3's (all have the same processor, GPU, RAM, etc) and the ability to stream data quickly to the GPU, allowing for real time visualization.

My opinion is that Sony has not only ripped off the people that bought the machine and use it as a second computer with Linux but they are also taking away a feature that has great potential to benefit the world and any problems that takes a flexible need to perform Complex calculations and perform many of them. While Folding@home does not need Linux and the OtherOS what applications down the road who don't get the advantage of being supported by the firmware are now missing out on access to great machine to help them along.

Many would argue that Sony gets nothing from selling machines at below cost and then have them thrown into a cluster or activity that is not gaming which they get no licensing fees from, but I counter that the more machines sold brings the price down and Sony does benefit there from reducing their price point from volume contracts.

But I have a Linux partition installed and I want to game to so I am a looser here.
