Guide how to Install new hard drive in your PS3

Compatible hard drives need to meet these specifications:

* 2.5" form (generally refered to as a notebook drive)
* Serial ATA interface, also shown as SATA
* 9.5mm Height

Removing the hard disk

1. Touch the power button on the system front for at least two seconds.

The power indicator will turn solid red and the system will enter standby mode.

2. Turn off the system using the main power switch on the system rear.

3. Unplug the AC power cord and detach the other cables from
the system.

For safety reasons, remove the plug for the power cord from the electrical outlet,
and then detach the other cables.

Use the space at the right edge of the HDD bay cover to pull it out from the system.

If the cover is difficult to remove, gently insert a
small screwdriver in the space and pry the cover off. Be careful not to damage the system or the cover when using a screwdriver.

Free the hard disk from the system.

Remove the blue screw with a crosshead screwdriver.

Replacing the hard disk
When replacing the hard disk, follow the procedure below to remove the metal frame.

Use a crosshead screwdriver to remove the screws (4 places).
These screws are very tight, be sure to find a screwdriver that fits very well, and take your time.
If you strip a screw head and want to purchase a replacement screw see the bottom of this post.

im backing up my files right now. It is at 20% and says approximately 49 minutes left. I ran out of space a while ago so I had to delete the qore episodes off my hard drive. I got the 250 gb for $55 on ebay. I hope I don't strip the screws, that would suck.

I'd watch what your doing, you run a very high risk of overheating.

I just did this and one thing i didnt see mentioned or maybe it was just me..... It was mentioned in the owner manual of the ps3 though.

You need to go to www.us.playstation.com/ps3 and download the system update file otherwise the new hard drive will not work. I did a full system back up to a 16 gig thumb drive and then swapped hard drives. It would not work because it said it needed the system update file of 2.whatever first. So i had to go to the computer and download that to the thumb drive also and it worked fine after that. I then did a system restore of the backed up game saves and all the other stuff from the thumb drive and all my info came back.

I went with the Seagate 250gb 7200rpm drive. When its complete it goes down to 232gb and after doing the restore with game saves and everything it shows me with free space of 200 gb out of 232 gb. So if you want a true 250gb free space id go with the 320gb HD to start off.

3. and after i put new hdd in how i get all my saved stuff back . some vids would be nice thanx
4. and one more question. i got a 40g right now and if i up date it to a 320gb or whatever will it have backward compatibility.

you cant have backwards compatibility on a ps3 that didnt have it, i would use these hard drives as they seem to work best You must login or register to view this content.
