To start off with, I got this idea after messing around with my ipod touch. I hated the fact that it told me to update my ipod every time I went onto itunes. So i went into iFile and looked through a lot of folders and eventually found one that contained the file that stated what f.w. my ipod was on. I changed it to 4.3 and plugged it back into my computer. Opened up itunes, and it didn't ask me to update!

So if we can Jailbreak the ps3, and get into its files. Then we can find the file that states what F.W. it's on and change it to 3.42 or something. The reason why this wouldn't corrupt the .pup file is because of the same reason that makes it so that the mw2 files don't get corrupted. It's in developer mode!

Incredibly mis-leading title:/:n: and looking for a file containing information which tells the server what FW is on the PS3 is not exactly a new idea lol

This theory has been mentioned already. Even if it works, it'll definitely be a lot harder than changing the firmware number in one file.
