First I have gathered by browsing these forums that you need two ps3's to host challenge lobbies which is what I would hope to eventually do. I have my original ps3 on the newest firmware(3.5?)but I don't have one jail broken or on 3.41.

A friend at school told me his ps3 has been broken of over a year and I'm thinking about buying it to jailbreak.
He says that the disc reader is broken so my question for all of you is will I need the ps3 running the jailbreak to be able to read discs?

Ps: Also if its running a FW under 3.41 I can upgrade it to 3.41 we just can't downgrade, right?

Yes, it's best to have a working disc drive, and you can update from a earlier firmware version by using a usb stick.

Guy below u is noob. You need a WORKING Bluray drive in te JB ps3 in order to do this TRUST ME!! You CAN update with a usb stick. DOWNGRADING IS NOT POSIIBLE. Lol sorry for caps, just stating those points more or less for guy below you with false info.

Well actually you can do everything without a working bluray drive.

The new payloads (depends on what device u have) allow you to run games without any disc in the drive.

But in saying this... you have to think how do u get the games on there in the first place.. well you will have to download them.

And yes u can update your ps3.. just not downgrade

So it is possible to download say mw2 to the hard drive of the jail-broken ps3 with never putting a disc in it then?
How would I go about downloading a games files to the ps3?

EDIT: I guess I should point out that I was hoping there would be a way to send the game over to the backup manager from my pc or the un-jailbroken ps3.
