But instead of putting the right payload in i put a self file that bricked my ps3 perm. Would it be better to fork out the 150$ for Sony to replace my out of warranty ps3, Or try to reflash/replace the NAND manually?

Extract a update pup
Edit version.txt to be your version if it isn't
Remove extra shit from update_files.tar
replace ps3swu.self with the payload
repack the pup
install via sw update.
BAM! Jailbroken.
