My first note: There is a difference between YOUR PSN Avatar and the picture that is shown on your screen. When you select your Avatar via the PSN, it saves this into the PlayStation Servers and also puts a link on your PS3 for your PS3 to Display. In addition, a link is put on your PS3 for all of your friends's Avatars.

So, every time someone chooses a new Avatar, there selection is saved onto the PlayStation Servers and a link is created so the Picture can be displayed on their PS3 as well as all of their friends's PS3's

Basically, there is a difference between your SELECTION and the VISUAL IMAGE. The VISUAL IMAGE is stored on your PS3. Which we all know can be change temporarily. However, every time you log onto your PSN account, the PlayStation Servers recognize your SELECTION and refresh the link on your PS3 as well as everyone else's PS3. (This is why when you start up your PS3, your avatar loads for a second before actually showing.)

Since the PlayStation Servers look for your SELECTION, putting a custom link in your np_cache will not be recognized for it is not part of the PlayStation Servers. Therefore, the only way to create a PERMANENT Avatar, is to SOMEHOW add an Image to the PlayStation Network. Not only is this impossible, it is ILLEGAL. To do this, you would have to hack into the PlayStation Network. That would most definitely result in jail time.

POINT BLANK, THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY OF USING A CUSTOM AVATAR PERMANENTLY. Sorry.

Things I have found out today while Exploring my PS3:
- In the metadata_hdd files, there are links for all of your friends avatar's (Modifying these will corrupt your hard drive)
- In the system files, it shows that every time your system detects that you have logged into a PSN account, it scans the PSN for you Avatar selection and refreshes the link found in your np_cache
