What if the PS3's cell processor could emulate the Emotion Engine? Theoretically, all PlayStation 3s would be able to play PS2 games even if a console didn't have the proper hardware. According to a recent patent filed by Sony Computer Entertainment in the US, Sony has the code and technology ready to do this.

There are two main ways to emulate hardware. Interpretation is when target code is decoded and converted into a language the host can understand. The other strategy is to decode and recompile programs in the host's language.

Maybe the concept is better explained another way. Interpretation is like having someone constantly translating English to Japanese for you, non stop, twenty four hours a day wherever you go. Decoding and recompiling is like someone translating a sets of words and putting them in a dictionary you can reference.

God damit Sony. I want this now. For those hackers trying to do this, at least you know you can do it. Smile Sony better not make us pay for this.

if you take the "ps3_softemu.self" and "unself" it, you get a lot more info on the emulation itself, maybe even possibly making your own "ps2_rom.bin" which is basically the BIOS for it and all the info is in the ".elf"

EDIT: "unselfed" all the files in the "ps3emu" folder and theres tons of information on the backwards compatibility, it seems that all that is missing is the BIOS and the proper APP to make it work, all the stuff is written into it, might not even need an APP for it to work. ill keep looking into it and possibly try and get a PS2 BIOS and throw it into the flash and try it out.

Exactly!!!

What the hell is the OP talking about saying sony can emulate the ps2 on ps3.

They have already done this on the fat ps3's
Early fat ps3's had a hardware to run ps2 games
Later fat ps3's had software to emulate the ps2 games

Then they got rid of it altogher because they still sell a significant amount of ps2 consoles worldwide. So when ps2 consoles stop selling they will probably release an update so we can play ps2 games again on all ps3's.

If you look around on your ps3 slim or fat you will find ps2 emulation files and folders, they are already there, but not enabled

on top of that you have the HD "remakes" that makes them money too, i don't think they will be enabling BC for a while yet.
