Post: How to play Backups (with pkg's)

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Nothing new here - just a tutorial from a post that I put in Q&A, and thought it would make a good tutorial for all those people who say "This package doesn't work!" "This isn't working!" Yea, well sometimes it doesn't work even if you do this because the pkg isn't working, but this is what I did to get backed up games working step by step. You can't just backup a game and install a pkg to play it, it's not that simple. (I was one of those people...)

1. You're going to need a file manager, a backup for a game you want, and a pkg for that game. I recommend having blackbox ftp on your ps3 and Smart FTP on your PC. Once you have these things you can move onto step 2.

2. If you downloaded the backup, use blackbox ftp and connect it to your pc. I suggest putting it in /devhdd0/GAMEZ/ for ease of use. You only need the ps3_game folder for this to work. If you backed it up using a manager, it should be in /devhdd0/GAMEZ/ or /devhdd0/game/LAUN12345/ I'm not sure which, and it depends on which manager you are using.

3. Now, once it's on your ps3 install the pkg for the game. If you run it, it WILL NOT WORK unless you do the following steps.

4. Now, the pkg should have created a folder in the /devhdd0/game/(game keycode). To find this keycode, the pkg should be called something like UP0001-xxxxxx-.... the xxxxxx is the keycode for the game. Now, the whole game isn't there, just some folders and a modified eboot.bin the USRDIR folder.

5. This step is important. I recommend creating a folder called EBOOT in the /devhdd0/ directory before doing this step. Go to the /devhdd0/game/(game keycode from pkg)/USRDIR/ and there should only be one file there - the EBOOT.bin Move that file to the folder you created called /devhdd0/EBOOT/ and keep it there. Delete the USRDIR folder in this directory - /devhdd0/game/(game keycode from pkg)/USRDIR/
Remember the backed up folder from before? (/devhdd0/GAMEZ/ or /devhdd0/LAUN12345/)
Go to the folder that has the game and go to this directory. (/backedupgame/ps3_game/) There should be a folder called USRDIR, copy that folder to /devhdd0/game/(gamekeycode)/
now you should have a new USRDIR from the folder created from the pkg.

6. Delete the eboot in the folder /devhdd0/game/(gamekeycode)/USRDIR/
and replace it with the backed up eboot from /devhdd0/EBOOT/

7. If you did all of this, it should work if you downloaded a working pkg.

To clear up Step 5 and 6:

Okay, now that you have recommended it I will do a picture tutorial. Of course, it will only be with my phone, but I will do what I can. Most of you get lost at the 5th step and I will now clear that up. I was writing this when I was half asleep, so I see some hard to understand things I put in here that isn't noob friendly.

For step 5 I say create an EBOOT folder in the /devhdd0/ directory so you have somewhere to put the eboot.bin when you delete the USRDIR folder. If you have more than an eboot.bin or a configuration.ini, it's your backed up game. You want to go to /devhdd0/game/(gamekeycode)/USRDIR. Not the directory where your backup is.

The directory /devhdd0/GAMEZ/ are EXAMPLES of where your backed up game might be.
I backup my games using a file manager because I choose where to put them myself.
Basically, go to the folder where your backup is and copy the USRDIR folder to /devhdd0/game/(gamekeycode).

I told you to make a folder called EBOOT in /devhdd0/ because you want to keep the eboot from the USRDIR folder you deleted. Go into the EBOOT folder and copy the eboot (and other files like configurations.ini to the new /devhdd0/game/(gamekeycode)/USRDIR/ directory.

I hope this clears up steps 5 and 6. I'm going to be uploading pics for this too once FONV finishes downloading and I have a working pkg (a message would be good since I'm busy atm!)

I would make a video, but I have nothing to record with. Come to think of it, there is a camera in my sister's room...

There will be a video tutorial tomorrow or the next day (need batteries). The quality will be bad, but it will be understandable. So until then, try to use this text tutorial until I make the video.

that would help out a lot of people

No. It needs to be in that specific folder.

Going to start the video

Actually, I moved AC Brotherhood to a different folder and it was still working, so it might work. I don't have an external hdd so I can test it out.

When you go to the game in your XMB hit triangle then go to information, if it's like 20MB for the size then you haven't moved your usrdir to your eboot, either that or remove your game data for the game

Video tutorial done. I can't upload it until tomorrow though because I don't have the right usb cable, or a computer that has an SD slot until tomorrow.

This does not work for GTA Iv :(

I heard that GTA4 was a pain to get to work. I gave my disc to a friend to, so I can't try it out.

Like I said in the OP though - not all games work sadly.
