im using regero and theres options to copy games to usb which would be in this case an external hard drive, havent tested it so im not sure if it will work

Yes you can. Just use multiman or sum and click USB. I done it.

Yea when your in Multiman or what ever you use it will ask you if u want to coppy the game to the PS3 HDD Click No then it should ask you to install it to the next USB memory thing in yoru PS3 eg External HDD

k so i did that and have a full game on my external harddrive how would i be able to play it off of there or i can i only can save it?????

Just choose the option to backup your games to an external device, I have a 2TB HD that I use
