i can confirm that you DO NOT need to update to OFW 3.55 first if you're coming from an older OFW, i updated directly from like 2.60 to kmeaw's via xmb no prob.
good stuff.

[multipage= Install A back-up PS3 game To An External Hard Drive]

How to Install A back-up PS3 game To An External Hard Drive

Here's how to install your back-up PS3 game on an external hard drive in order to launch from a jailbroken console.

Prerequisites:

- PS3 console FAT or SLIM of course.

- An external hard drive formatted in Fat32.

- A backup-manager.

Creating files on your hard drive:

-STEP 1
Create a new folder on your hard drive (formatted FAT32), which responds to the name "GAMEZ"

-STEP 2
Copy your game to be in a file that meets the identifying name of your game such as BLES12345 BLUS12345 or even BCES12345.

-STEP 3
This gives you on your hard disk the following path: for example
    GAMEZ/BLES12345

NOTE: Inside your folder BLES12345 you must have at least 2 to 3 files that are:
    PS3_GAME/PS3_DISK.SFB/PS3_UPDAT

If you have these 3 files and you do not know the identifier of the game to create the folder BLESXXXXX, well just go into the file PS3_GAME, and you will find a file on behalf of PARAM, you open this file with this software You must login or register to view this content. and you will see the code BLESxxxxx which will be the name of the folder you need to create to store your files
    PS3_GAME/PS3_DISK/PS3_UPDAT.

SUMMARY :

The final path to your external hard drive will be as follows:
    GAMEZ => BLESXXXXX => PS3_GAME/PS3_DISK.SFB/PS3_UPDAT

FINAL STEP: Turn on your PS3, connect your external hard drive and go to your backup manager, you will find that your game should appear like any other backup. Start

NOTE: All games are not compatible with the external hard drive but a great party runs smoothly.

Here's how to split your file game over 4GB to put it on external hard drive formatted in FAT32.

Let's get started :

- Download this software (runs on all Windows platform) from Attached Files Below

- Run the software and a window opens, click the bar that is below "Source game folder" to check your computer folder that contains the file more than 4gb "BLESxxxxx" like the picture below:

You must login or register to view this content.

- Then click on the bar that is below "Destination folder game", a window opens to choose the output directory, I suggest you take the same as the one that contains your game:

You must login or register to view this content.

- So, press START and the cutting begins, it is long, be patient and do not close the software before you mark "SUCCESFULL SPLIT!"

NOTE: The file is too large to copy on your external hard drive will be kept in the folder BLESxxxxx of your game, when you copied and pasted on your external hard drive FAT32, a message appears, saying that such a file, too large, ignore the file and copy continuously without problem.

NOTE: You can also simply delete the file that is too big in your file directly BLESxxxxx but make no mistake.

You're afraid to brick your PS3? So I advise you to stay on the OFW and play original games, or wait, maybe Sony will release a CFW.

I attempted to backup using both Gaia Manager (new one) as well as the new multiMAN but I'm getting the black screen...

I used this:

OFW --> WUTANGRZA (without using recovery mode) --> GEOHOT

I'll have a go at recovery mode but I'm pretty sure updating via storage device manually through the XMB is the same as using recovery mode...
