Post: [HOW TO] Transfer Backups from ps3 to PC + Offline FTP'ing + Backup fixes
01-22-2011, 08:26 PM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); **Mods/Admins I have not seen anything relating to this method so I figured I would share with others my findings through my own testing. If this is deemed posted in wrong thread please move etc.**

Let me say that I will NOT answer PM's, posts etc about where to get games or anything piracy related. I tested all of this with my collection of owned games through me and my family's collection.

**UPDATED** Added step 5: PASSIVE MODE and tweaked some steps in DNS setup on PC side to avoid confusion thanks to DONSTICKYGREEN for bringing this to my attention.

In this thread I will discuss:
1. Stealth Method of FTP'ing to your machine. Note that the method I have found DOES NOT require the internet so no fear of "others" seeing your actions. Winky Winky

2. how to transfer files VIA a cable for faster transfers.

3. Copying then Deleting the game from your ps3 once the transfer from ps3 to pc is complete as well as returning a game back to the ps3 from your external storage device/pc.

4. Returning your ps3/pc to regular network communication.

5. How to set up auto login of ftp program and enable PASSIVE MODE to speed up access to ps3 files for copying/editing.

6. A (sort of) off topic method that has helped me run EVERY game I have backed up.

What Do You Gain From This?

-From here you can transfer games FROM the ps3 hdd to your pc/laptop for extra storage. This eliminates the problems with file sizes being to big and splitting etc. Also a wired transfer is the way

to go when moving big files. (I receive about 40 mb/s)
-For those not connected to the internet and want to remain that way can, while still using the benefits of FTP.
-Hopefully some knowledge and courage to do sh!t on your own and quit the trollin!

So let's jump right into things..

First, my Specs: OFW > KMEAW CFW
Running stealth ftp Blackbox 1.2, Multiman (newest with lv2 patch integrated) and my ps3 is a slim 250gb.

What you'll Need:
-a FTP based client for your pc and one installed and ready on your ps3. I suggest and use, WinSCP for pc and blackbox for ps3.

-Crossover cable is what I used for faster data transfer, I hear that an Ethernet cable can also be used but untested by me.

-CFW loaded/ready and knowledge. I will not answer posts requesting how to install or flash CFW etc. That is OFF topic from what I am doing.
-------------------------------------------------------------
1.)Stealth FTP'ing to your console.

step 1: (Download and install a ftp of your choice to both the ps3 and your pc if you haven't already done so, for time reasoning's I will not go into detail on how to do this!)

*attach a crossover cable(?)Ethernet cable from the back of the ps3 into your laptop/pc.

(For users who are already online with their ps3 but wish to try offline transferring) On the xmb of the ps3 go to SETTINGS>NETWORK SETTINGS>SETTINGS AND CONNECTION STATUS LIST. This will list your

current setup of internet configuration. WRITE down anything you may need if you had to configure your network manually in the past. (EX. IP) You will be thankful you did this when it comes time to

switch back to fully online again. IF you are a online ps3'er who just uses automatic settings, or a user who does NOT use the internet you can ignore the above and move to step 2.

Step 2: Navigate into SETTINGS>NETWORK SETTINGS>internet connection settings>custom>wired Connection>AutoDetect>Manual(under ip address setting) and enter the following: (You can use whatever you'd

like as long as it isn't a current ip in use etc.)
I have mine as follows: 100.1.1.1 for ip
subnet 255.255.255.0
default router. primary dns and secondary all 100.1.1.1
finish out the network setup and save it.

Now on your laptop/pc access your LAN card, right click it select properties, locate tcpipv4 and select properties. Manually enter the following: *Note if you used your own random ip on the ps3 be sure to make this one identical up to the last digit.
example: My ps3 ip is 100.1.1.1 so on my pc I will make the ip 100.1.1.2 everything else, subnet dns etc should be IDENTICAL to your ps3's setting. *UPDATE* On the pc/LAN card side you do NOT need an alternate DNS, just fill in the Primary DNS as the same as your ps3's Primary DNS.

Save the setting and your pc will identify your ps3.

Step 3. Load blackbox or whatever ftp you have on your ps3 and notice that your ip displays as the one you just created. (100.1.1.1)
On the pc, load your ftp client. In WinSCP under host you enter your ps3 ip: 100.1.1.1 and port 21. Make sure file protocol tab is FTP not SFTP or SFP. connect. You have now connected to your ps3

via ftp and internet-free.
--------------------------------------------------------------
2.): Transfer a ripped game from ps3 to pc via wired -FTP
*This assumes you have basic knowledge and experience inside FTP.

For this example I will be using a rip of Bioshock (BLUS30166). After I ripped the game using multiman I installed the game data and played a few minutes. Created a save and exited back to XMB.
Space before rip and data install was 154gb free, after was 142. (About 11 gb total for the game itself.)

In WinSCP or any other ftp client, navigate into your GAMES folder of the hddo folder. (This is assuming you burn your games directly onto the ps3 harddrive!) Inside you will see your list of games

sanctioned by its gameID number. Bioshock was BLUS30166. Simply right click and copy the folder and on the left panel, your pc side, navigate to where you want to store your backups. Be sure to

create a folder (for organizational purposes) with the name of the game. Ex. BLUS30166 = Bioshock so I created a folder called 'BioShock' then another inside it which I named 'From hddo GAMES'.

Bioshock>From hddo GAMES> paste BLUS30166.
The copy process is MUCH faster than wireless and when the transfer is complete you can verify the file size is correct by right clicking and checking properties. Mine was a little over 11gbs.

[OPTIONAL] If you want you can also move the game data of your game by searching in the other folders for the game id. I left mine as I will often play it.

Now, close ftp and head over to the ps3. You can now delete the newly transferred game from your ps3 harddrive via multiman or whatever BM you use. This will remove the game itself, about 11gb of

space on Bioshock. My free space went from 142 to 14gbs.

---------------------------------------------------------------
3.)Copy Game Back to ps3 hdd:
To put the game back you go back into FTP and connect again to your ps3. Locate the game you originally copied over, in my case, bioshock, so i copied BLUS30166 from the folder i created, ' From

hddo Games' and pasted it back into the ps3, hddo/GAMES, with the rest of my rips. This process will take some time, about 9 minutes for me, but again is MUCH faster wired than wireless.
After transfer completes you can exit FTP and on your ps3 load up your BM and the game will be back in the list.

Now load the game and it will start. *NOTE* it will act as if it is installing game data again and hang here for a few minutes. (Remember when I said all i copied over to the pc was BLUS30166 from

hddo/GAMES?) It DOES NOT reinstall the game data as the amount of space after transferring BLUS30166 back to the ps3 remains at 142gbs.(The original 11gb install.) For example Bioshock (BLUS30166)

took about 28 minutes to install game data originally. When I copied the game back over and ran it again it sat on installing for about 5 minutes, if that. The save game I created loaded just fine

from the menu once I got to it.

The purpose of all of that? No worries about Fat32 size limitations and size limitations of your ps3 internal hdd!
----------------------------------------------------------------

4.)Returning your ps3/pc to regular network communication

If you have a laptop and run on your network wirelessly, then you can keep this configuration saved on your lan card. If you only have a desktop with one LAN card or just want it back to normal

then all you have to do is navigate back to your LaN card, and right click it, choose properties, select tcpipv4, select properties and set it to automatic or whatever your setting was earlier.

To return to a normal internet state on your ps3, simply navigate to SETTINGS>NETWORK SETTINGS>internet connection settings> and select Auto if you normally use auto or custom and enter the

information you had saved in the first step! Remember, I said you would be thankful for that!
---------------------------------------------------------------
5.) Also, if you notice slow access to the ps3 via ftp connection, i.e. folders take longer to load or show then enable PASSIVE MODE via your computer side ftp program. This will speed up access to your ps3's HDD and also help with overall transfer speeds.

For example I use WINSCP so here is how you would enable PASSIVE MODE with autologin and password saved so if the file does fail during a transfer it will auto resume:
1.) Start WINSCP
2.)Click NEW on the right side.
3.) Enter your ps3 IP address
4.)username can be anything along with password
5.)protocol select ftp
6.) On left hand side select connection tab and select passive mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------
6.)method that has helped me run EVERY game I have backed up:
Okay short and sweet here. I see a lot of people complaining about black screens in games, especially in COSad AwesomeBO so here is what I did to get it to work. Reminder: I am on KMEAW and running MultiMan

1.13.0 with lvl2 patch built in.

At first I got a black screen and freeze when trying to load Black Ops. (on both options, direct boot and xmb icon list.) This is what helped me.

1. Any BD in drive.
2. Tried COD BO but froze.
3. Loaded a different game from hdd that I knew worked. (Just Cause 2)
4. When game icon appeared went back into multiman and loaded BO
5. Selected NO, kicked me back to xmb and loaded via game icon. Game ran fine then.

So it seems that every time i run into a game not loading I use the above method and 9/10 it will load on the second try. NOTE that I am using a fresh backup from original disc.

I know this is extremely detailed and probably over-thought but I really wanted this to be as noob-friendly as it could get. I put a lot of time into this as I feel a contribution from every member
is a must since most people only want want want! Don't expect a ton of pointless posts/threads from me. It isn't about the quantity of posts, but the quality.

Hope this helped some people. Rep it, like it, thank it, hate it or whatever you have to do. Happy Gaming!!

Thanks. Yea 60gb isn't much at all. but until your drive comes you could start your backing up now so all you have to do is re-copy it over to the new one instead of ripping all at once. Winky Winky

Anybody else tried this? I was hoping this thread would be active. I guess people don't realize that this means your hdd size of ps3 literally doesn't matter. Facepalm

How big is the game in its full? And what FTP client are you using on your pc? I suggest winSCP I like it much better than filezilla.

I transferred black ops, 18 gigs, in less than 20 mins using the above method but I'm using a crossover cable instead of a cat5.

Be sure to also transfer to a pc before backing it up to an external if that is what your doing. Let me know.

Did you follow the above tutorial? You need to set your ps3's ip and your pc's accordingly so that they communicate directly. I would suggest winSCP instead like i said before. Also, a crossover cable is different than an ethernet cable. Google it. Crossover is male to male connection, used for data transfer. Also, speed time is longer going to ps3 during transfer than copying from.

Do you remember what your transfer speed was when you had it through wired FTP?
