I've been reading up on how I can partake in the hacked modern warfare 2 community and, being totally new to the hacked PS3 was wondering:

1.) Do I need to jailbreak my PS3 to begin enjoying playing totally hacked games online?

2.) If caught by Sony or Activision, is your PS3 banned?

Yes you need to jailbreak your PS3. But as soon as you get your hacks in, just go back to Sony's official firmware. A bunch of people are doing that, but i'm not because there is no point....

This is all new to me... when I turned MW2 on today I had NO idea what I was getting myself into.

In res response to both questions:

1) You do need to jailbreak in one of 2 methods to host modded lobbies, yes. You can either jailbreak ur one PS3 (using custom firmware) which you can learn more about right here on NGU. Check that out ..... OR if you have a second PS3 on 3.41 you can just put a modded patch on that and transfer it to your 3.55 PS3 with the Data Transfer Utility which is on you PS3 by default

2) PS3 is a lot more laid back the Xbox. Generally you wont get banned. Sony doesnt really care as much as microsoft. Plus, if you get banned, chances are hundreds of other big hackers got banned as well and regardless of the situation the NGU community will make a team effort to help you and the others get unbanned

I only have one PS3... Jailbreaking my PS3 won't inadventantly brick it? I'm not at all a programmer so I'm gonna have to the step by step approach outlined by folks who know what the heck they're doing.

Another good question my man! In order to host lobbies with one PS3 you need install the custom firmware (which can be found in these forums) just search for a installation tuorial... And after you install the custom firmware, run a program that comes with that called FTP server. Then go onto your Computer, open up the program called filezilla, connect to your PS3 and drag and drop a modded patch. Once you overright the patch, quit out of filezilla, go on PS3 and have fun hosting!

That is a lot to handle for someone new to this I know so here are a few good videos for you I found! They will show you how to host challenge lobbies using any mehtod you want! its about as simple as it gets and you can rewind it a bunch of times and go with it step by step if you like! So once I actually jailbreak my PS3 I can still log into the PSN using my current screen name or would you recommend creating a second "hacked" screen name...

Which firmware are you using?

In addition, Adding the "Custom Firmware" will not break your PS3 at all. All it does is allows you to connect to your PS3 from your Computer through a program called FileZilla and change ur files (And more importantly the patch_mp.ff) which is the code MW2 runs off.

basically all hosting comes down to is connecting to your PS3 with FileZilla (From your PC) and changing the patch. Look at the videos I posted. It will show you the full steps:
1) Installing the Custom Firmware
2) Installing FTP server
3) COnfiguring the FIleZilla program I told u about
And Lastly..
4) Changing the patch on your computer

After those 4 steps you just go onlin and have fun hosting bro!

** it doesnt matter at all bro. like I said, sony doesnt issue a lot of bans ( hense EliteMossy and really any of us not being banned by now). For that reason you can just go ahead and sign on PSN with your normal name and have fun. Dont even worry about gettin banned bro.

And in responce to which firmware im using:
I have 2 PS3s because ive been hosting for like 3 months now and this custom firmware stuff didnt exist then so I just use the 3.41 PS3 to connect to my computer and then trasfer the patch through data transfer utility. (The older, more annoying way)
