You answered your own question... "but i cant play backups on this without the working disk drive" you could use one of your friends ps3s to back up some games to an external HDD then hook that up to your ps3 to play them...

I know i can put backups on the one he gave me, but i cant play them without inserting a disk in the drive because the ps3 needs to be tricked into thinking the disk you inserted is the one on your HDD. So m basicly trying to get both to be able to play games
