To be able for the PS3 to read your USB it has to be formatted as FAT32; the problem with FAT32 is that it can only read up to 4GB of data, anything larger then that and it will not show up. This applies for any other external storage connected via USB too.

I suggest you get an Internal HDD then use an FTP server to transfer your games to your ps3.
