- What is a PS3 Jailbreak?
A jailbreak for the PS3 was a exploit on the USB ports of the console. If properly hacked/exploited, a USB device could be used to inject modified programming into the PS3 firmware in memory and allow you to run unsigned code.
- What is Custom Firmware?
PS3 custom firmware, or CFW is a modification to sony's offical firmware. It can be used to add or remove things. CFW has been used to allow you to run homebrew among other things.
- How is Custom Firmware different from a jailbreak?
Custom firmware is an actual modification to sony's offical firmware (PS3 operating system). A jailbreak merely exploits a vulnerability in FW 3.41 allowing you to run homebrew. Also a jailbreak "hack" must be run on every PS3 boot-up, while a CFW is permanent unless you install official firmware back. Since we are past 3.41, "jailbreaking" is no longer recommended and will only work on 3.41 FW.
- So, how can I install Custom Firmware?
Well I have wrote an application to make it simple for you. Simply search NGU for PS3 MasterMind. It has no GUI, but is interactive and dead easy to use. It makes it almost impossible to brick your PS3.
- What is the BEST firmware to use?
Currently I recommend kmeaw. That may change in the future though. Kmeaw has a record for never bricking from what i have heard, and I use it personally.
- So once I have CFW installed, how do I run challenge lobbies in MW2?
This seems to be one of the only reasons people want to go to CFW. I recommend downloading and installing multiMAN. When you run it, it is an automatic file manager, FTP server and more. Simply use FileZilla to connect to your PS3, and navigate to hard drive 0 (Cant remember the actual directory, and ATM, my PS3 froze.). When your in the main HDD partition, go to game, then BLUS30377. It may be different based on your country, but will have 30377. Then go into USRDIR, and overwrite the patch_mp.ff with your modded one. This does assume you have all game updates installed...
- How do I install homebrew to my CFW PS3?
Simply put the given PKG on the root of a USB flash/pen drive. Put it in your PS3, and install it through "Install Package Files"
- How can I get Black Op's 15th prestige?
...There is currently a way with a modified EBOOT.BIN, but you can get banned very easily. please view the Black Ops modding forums for more information.
- How can I make a Black ops patch?
Um, for now you can not. I did some personal testing, and it seems like MW2, the PS3 FF files have different compression (more/less), than xbox FF's. We would need to figure out how to open them to be able to do GSC modding on PS3. I am waiting on that myself as well.
- Can I get banned for modding/hacking and/or having CFW?
This is a pretty obvious question. You always risk getting banned on game servers. You can also get account banned. Sony can console ban you, but I doubt they will go that far. I personally use the "Wipe History" PS3 application to clear my game logs before signing into PSN. It reduces the risk..
- ZOMFG my friend just told me sony can disable my PS3 at will, is that true?????
HELL NO. It is illegal for sony to do that. If they did do it though, you would have a few million customers doing a class-action lawsuit.
- My PS3 bricked, how can I fix?
First, I am sorry for your lost. It is possible to fix a brick, but the average user could not do it as it involves advanced soldering and manually re-flashing the PS3 NAND chip. If you did this, it is more useful to play basketball with it, smash it with a hammer, sell it for parts, see how many times it will skip on a lake, or throw it off a cliff. Simply go and buy a new one and don't be so ignorant again!
- So sony released another firmware update, but I dont want to go to is, is there anyway to bypass?
There are two ways which usually work for a few days, then sony block it. Logan2 has a proxy tool and Aaron has a DNS trick. To do the DNS simply set 67.202.81.137 as your Primary and Secondary DNS server in your Internet Connection Settings on your PS3. If none work, your soo out of luck
