Basically a guy is hosting a DNS server that is configured to trick your PS3. This could not be sony. If you were technical enough, you could do this as well.

Wrong, it's Sony's 3.55 FW Servers, they have new DNS servers for each patch, they haven't closed the 3.55 FW Servers yet, so basically even if you still had 3.55 OFW, you could use the DNS bypass and be on the PSN.
