What is an FTP server?
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to exchange and manipulate files over a TCP/IP-based network, such as the Internet.
What can I do with an FTP server on my PlayStation 3?
• Full Read/Write access to all of "dev_hdd0" (including save areas, games, VM etc.)
• Full Read/Write access to "dev_flash2" and "dev_flash3"
• Full Read/Write access to connected usb devices
• Full Read access to "dev_flash"
• Full Read access to "dev_bdvd"
Why do we need to FTP?
Some PlayStation 3 games have files that are too large to fit on a FAT32 External HDD and because some people simply don't have access to an external HDD
Can't I connect my internal HDD to my pc?
The PS3 is encoded in a format that can't be viewed on a pc and therefore to transfer any files into or out of the internal HDD we need to use an FTP Server.
About this Tutorial
Many people have been asking me on how to copy games into the internal HDD so i decided to make a tutorial about it.
This tutorial will explain step by step on how to transfer games into your HDD from the moment you download the game from here until the moment it's playable via Backup Manager.
This method has been tested by me although the Homebrew FTP server for the PS3 has many flaws.
Requirements
# WinRaR
# USB
# Hacked PS3 Booted from PS-Jailbreak
# FTP Client like FlashFXP or FileZilla
# FTPServer 1.0b Homebrew Application by Blackb0x
# Backup Manager
Procedure
1. Boot your PS3 into dev mode with the desired PS-Jailbreak method.
2. Copy FTPServer 1.0b Homebrew Application into a USB stick and plug into your PS3.
3. Install the FTPServer 1.0b Homebrew Application by going into the "Install Package Files" folder and selecting the .pkg file.
4. Start the FTPServer application.
5. Start your FTP Client.
6. Connect to the IP address shown on the screen on port 21 leaving the user and password boxes blank.
7. Using WinRaR extract the contents of the .rar files you downloaded.
8. Copy the game folder into the "/dev_hdd0/game/LAUN12345/GAMEZ/" directory.
9.Wait untill the transfer is complete.
10. On your PS3, quit the FTPServer by pressing X to exit to the XMB.
11. Open Backup Manager and the game you just transferred should appear there.
12. Load it up
13. Play away!
Limitations of PS3 FTP Server Homebrew Application
• Can not write to dev_flash
• Can not rename files
As of the new Blackb0x FTPServer 1.0b release, I think these are the only 2 limitations but I have not tested to see if these exist or not since the update.
