I just read on Mathieulth's twitter page, that the man himself has found a way to unlock the 7th SPU.

For those's of you that dont know the cell chip has 8 SPUs, Sony in the PS3 only use/allow 7 though (helped and maybe still does in making the percentage yield of cell processors higher; a common enough technique in semiconductors- see why overclocking/unlocking works as well as it does), in software or more accurately in the old otherOS/linux mode this was reduced to 6 SPUs with one being hidden/taken for background menu, security and the like.

This hack then restores the 7th SPU for linux/otherOS mode (or indeed what is called that mode these days given all the recent hacking work).

So is this going to be unlocked for general GameOS use, or specifically for OtherOS? Because unless games are specifically programmed to use certain cores, it won't make a difference in game performance. (Case in point, Black Ops PS3 vs Black Ops 360)

I mean, as great as it sounds, I don't really get how this is supposed to be useful... But I don't really know a lot about the PS3's inner workings, so I'll take everyone else's word for it.

Very soon we will be able to run otherOS/Linux on 3.55 and maybe 3.56 if a CFW comes out for 3.56.
