Since the emergence of these initial ‘3mails of doom’, I have been trawling through this / other forums and spoken to friends in the scene community trying to find out basic commonalities that have resulted in us all receiving these threats.

I have noticed that there are many posts asking the same questions, saying the same things, and lots of: ‘I think this / I think that’. Also, in an effort to save some people having to trawl through pages of: ‘LOL , F*CK YOU $ONY!’ or ‘LOL, $ONY HAVE F*CKED YOU ALL!’ comments until you want to stick a carving knife into your own eye socket, I have collated the information

I have found and hopefully this can be a focal point to root out the actual cause, and then possibly a solution can be found (if one exists).

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PROVE / DISPROVE ANY OF THE COMMENTS BELOW WITH FACTS

THE BELOW LIST IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS FURTHER EVIDENCE BECOMES AVAILABLE

WHAT WE KNOW:

1. It is the PS3 MACHINE that gets flagged – NOT JUST USER ACCOUNTS.
Too many comments proving this have been logged.

2. NOTHING TO DO WITH KILLZONE 3
many people are receiving these mails who have never let the game anywhere near their PS3. However, whether it’s for with playing any games before release date, we’re not sure. Maybe you’ve had Deadspace 2, or MVC3?

3.NOT just a ‘blanket’
$ony email to everybody. They know who they’re sending it to. There are many confirmed reports from ‘100% legit’ 3.56 people who have not received any email. They’re safe – go figure.

4.NOT THE FAULT OF THE ‘F*CKPSN’
feature, or the CA24 (Although it probably hasn’t helped) – but too many people are getting the email who never got round to doing it. Me and a few mates were just about to try it when this kicked off, and we have received the 3mail of doom.

5. HOW MANY TIMES YOU HAVE LOGGED ON TO PSN.
Once? Twice? Three times a lady? It doesn’t matter. Even if you logged on for 8 seconds for sh!ts and giggles, that seems to be enough. You’ll get flagged if you’re on the internet in any way whatsoever with your PS3 – logged on or not.

6. BOTH CFWs & DONGLES CAN GET YOU FLAGGED.
I believe there are too many comments stating this to be bullsh!t.

7. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY WEBSITE YOU ARE A MEMBER OF.
Take off your tinfoil hats, people. I have many friends & relatives who have received the 3Mod, yet have NEVER joined or commented on a PS3-hacking related website.

8. PS3NINJA DOES NOT HELP.
Many reports coming in from people who use it religiously and have still gotten busted.

9. (NEW) DELETING HISTORY DIDN'T HELP.
It was a good idea, but it now appears it raised more issues than it solved

10. PSIDPatch 1.0 - Changes Your PS ID Method.

A nice PS3 app that will help users avoid being banned from PSN. It's called PSIDPatch 1.0, and its capable of changing a user's PSID/Console ID. The PSID/Console ID is one of the unique identifiers that Sony can use to ban you by. Changing your PSID to a fake one would protect your console from being permanently banned. However it's...

Doesnt work on Waninkoko v2 either, keeps giving 80010009 when trying to start it after install
Some are getting the error 80029519 when trying to start

11. Stream Movies on Media servers.
WORKING

WHAT WE DON’T KNOW (but would like to find out):

1. EXACTLY HOW MUCH $ONY KNOWS
before they’ve issued the 3Mod – I haven’t found a single piece of conclusive proof that it is anything other than logging on to PSN with a FW .56. Is it the Mac Address? IP? Processor serial? Who knows? (Well, $ony do obv)

2. WHAT THEY’RE GOING TO DO NEXT?.
Duh, but are these temp bans?, permanent bans?, or threats that they cannot actually carry out? Time will tell.

3. If it was down to the initial Awesome faceNS trick’. Now this could be proven / disproven soon enough?,
I haven’t read anything conclusively that states that people who never used the initial DNS trick

4. WHY SOME PEOPLE SEEM TO BE GETTING AWAY WITH IT?
Bullsh!t? luck? Ignorance? But there are many posts from people saying they’re still on PSN, have not received and email, and are playing on a ‘hacked to the @sshole’ system. More info is required.

5. WHETHER IT CAN BE FIXED.
Because we’re still speculating as to how they’ve rumbled us, no-one yet knows how to fix it. Was it Linux? Homebrew? Backup Managers? However, If the XBOX can be unbanned, it can’t be beyond the realms of the imagination of scene people far cleverer than me to find a workaround.

Another important point is that you send Sony log files every time you boot your system. This is more than likely the method they've used to track jailbreak users.

Looks like we’d all better wait until it dies down and more info is out there. In the meantime, I wonder if a CFW 3.56 would fix this? And WHERE THE F*CK IS IT?
Hold on to your butts, people.

Lifetime PSN Ban?

Ban hammer for PS3 hackers

The PlayStation 3’s security has been fatally breached, thus enabling those with a mind for such things to play illicit (i.e pirated) games on the console.

Sony is currently considering a number of options to combat the pirates. We’ve already heard about the possibility of unique serial codes on game boxes – players will need to input a code in order to play the game in question. That might seem like a throwback to the very early days of home computer gaming, but it could work. Well, at least until the hackers find a way around such measures.

In the meantime Sony has a simpler, altogether more draconian plan in place – a lifetime PlayStation Network ban for anyone caught using a hacked PS3. That would mean no downloadable games, no extra content for existing games and no online multiplayer fun.

By all accounts emails are already being sent out to the transgressors. The wording is pretty unequivocal, not to mention a little ominous:

Unauthorized circumvention devices for PlayStation(R)3 system have been recently released by hackers for the PlayStation 3 system. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software.

Use of such devices or software violates the terms of your “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws.

A circumvention device and/or unauthorized or pirated software currently resides on your PlayStation 3 system. Immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from your PlayStation 3 system.

Failure to do so will result in termination of your access to PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through your PlayStation 3 system.

Of course, Sony needs to be able to identify individual hackers for this warning to have any effect. That may be an easier process than it sounds too. In short, the PlayStation Network only allows connections from consoles running the latest firmware version 3.56. The hack is configured to work with the older version 3.55 firmware.

As such, the pirates are already forced to do without the benefits of the PlayStation Network. Either that or they have to ‘spoof’ PSN into accepting a connection as if it was from a PS3 running the latest firmware. That’s not an easy trick to pull off and, we believe, would be relatively easy for Sony to detect.

It remains to be seen whether Sony’s threat will be enough to keep piracy at bay in the longer term. The current thinking is that hackers have found a way past the PlayStation 3’s notoriously tight security, so a few strong words aren't going to deter them. Moreover, bypassing the latest firmware – or making the current hack seamlessly compatible with it – is seen as a challenge in some quarters.

The precise scale of piracy, and the cost to Sony and its publishing partners, is unknown for the time being. We can’t imagine Sony ever wanting to share such information, either, lest it makes them look like a bunch of chumps who can’t secure their own console and the games it plays. Whatever the case, piracy can only account for a relatively small proportion of PlayStation 3 owners – around four million in the UK, nearly 48 million globally – the vast majority of whom are entirely happy to pay for the games they play.

Quite right too...

I don't think it has to do with any of the new games. The newest game I've let near my PS3 is Black Ops, and I got the email, so it doesn't have to do with Dead Space 2 or MVC3 for sure.

Another thing people might be wondering (I know I am) is if we have received the warning email, how long do we have to revert back to a legit/unhacked system? The email just says "immediately remove all circumvention devices..." And if we get that warning email do we actually have to remove cfw and update etc or could we just not play on the PS3 (turn it off) for a while in hope a way is made to go online without risk of being banned. i.e. are Sony waiting to see us using a legit system or are they waiting to see us play the hacked system again. If the later one then we can just turn off our PS3's and hopefully wait for solution.

Depending on your router, you should be able to set up the ps3's mac address to have zero internet access, but maintain local network access
