This might be what you are asking for:
1. Reformat or delete everything (backup first FTW) from your PS3's HDD
*** This way, the backups will only be a few mb each
2. Transfer a patch (self explanatory)
3. Load up in split screen to make sure it works
4. Plug in Fat32 flash drive
5. (Not sure of the exact path) Settings, Backup Utility, Backup
6. When the backup is done, it will say a very long lumber. Write this number down, then write the name of the patch.
7. Repeat steps 2-6 for every patch you want.
8. When you want to restore a backup, thus changing the patch, just Settings, Backup Utility, Restore
**** You can restore from backups you made on 3.55 on 3.56
