Most of us can probably do this in your sleep by now, but for the people who are still having trouble, Here's an Amusing easy guide posted over @PS3Crunch.

“FTP” stands for File Transfer Protocol.
The whole process here is that information is transferred between two stations/devices WITHOUT the use of a physical USB device.
It’s kind of like the internet BECOMES the USB drive, you know?
As you may have figured out, this method allows you to do many easy things to your PS3, such as transferring pkg. files directly, enabling PSN, and many more.
Here’s what you need and how to do it:
A PS3, an FTP software(I like to use You must login or register to view this content., but many uses You must login or register to view this content..
I will run the tutorial using WinSCP), and Internet connection running(Ethernet cable or WiFi, both is fine), and an FTP app on your PS3. That’s four things.
1. Download an FTP app and software, now. Remember, I will be using OpenPS3FTP and WinSCP for the PS3 and PC respectively.
In case you’re also wondering, I used the passworded version of OpenPS3FTP. Use Google to find the files. You’re not that dumb. Oh, and leave the internet running. You will need it in the second-last and last step.
2. Install the You must login or register to view this content. on your PS3 using a USB drive, and install the FTP software onto your PC. Now.
3. Head to your PC and open WinSCP. Click on “New”.
In the ‘Host name’ field, put in your IP address(you know, those four separated-by-dots numbers you see along with the file sizes in multiMAN), ‘Port number’ is 21, ‘User name’ is root, and ‘Password’ is openbox.
In ‘File protocol’, select FTP, and make sure you choose ‘No encryption’. Once finished, click ‘Save’.
Save the session as whatever you want to call it(just call it PS3, man), and click OK.
Too much for you to handle? Still breathing? If you are, then proceed.
4. Now run your fat body to the PS3 and run OpenPS3FTP.
Now move your gelatinous buttock back to your computer, and click ‘Login’ using your saved session on WinSCP.
5. WHOOOAAAAHHH WORMHOLE, and then you are connected.
The left side on the screen is your PC, the right side is your PS3. Certain things like dev_flash are only readable, and not deletable. Well, with dev_blind it isn’t. Have fun.
I prefer to use WinSCP because it is stable, light, supported with many types of file transferring system, and difficult to screw up with.
This guide is supposed to be idiot-proof, and completely noob-to-the-internet friendly.
If you are still having problems, then I would actually congratulate you for screwing up on a guide done with baby-steps.
Now that you know how to apply FTP, you can use it for many other devices, such as between PCs using the same connection
You should add a tutorial for wired FTP between your PC and PS3. It's about 10mb a sec quicker and its pretty easy as well, I'm sure that there's a tutorial on here somewhere that you could probably link to.
