/dev_hdd0/GAMES/*game ID*/PS3_UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

if on disk then I think its
dev_bdvd/PS3_UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

what is that file for?

Hmm.. Maybe to make sure you have a certain firmware e.g 3.5x before you play the game.. I'm not too sure though.. Try extracting it and sending it to me. I'll take a look

No if you can repack the eboot it won't ask young update. The rejection of game firm req. And ps3 firm is by the decryption of the eboot. If the ps3 can't decrypt it, it will ask to update.

But on with the Question. The backup maneger displays the game Id folder to emulate it on the bddrive. When it is on the bd drive it doesn't need the bddrive.

It's the bare minimum firmware that must be used to be able to play the game according to sony, it's really more of a way so people that don't have internet connections, or just not set up to their PS3 can receive updates so everything works accordingly and they can also get new features.
