I would upgrade to 3.55 and install Rebug CFW.
3.55 OFW: You must login or register to view this content.

Rebug 3.55 CFW. You can go online with it but it's different servers to retail PSN. But you can use server mapping to play against noobs online on supported games. As with every firmware theres a chance of a ban. I can't hotlink you but look at there site. rebug.me

You're correct there to some extent. You can't add friends/message or recieve messages from friends that are on the 3.60 servers. But you can send messages to people on 3.55rebug dev servers. You can also use server mapping and go online on supported games with people on 3.60 but they can't message you still. But atleast you get to play against some randomers.

I copy and paste my reply to a question exactly the same...

Follow this:

Installing 3.55 Official Firmware:

Download the offical 3.55 firmware from here provided by Sony:

https://dus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/image/us/2010_1207_ca595ad9f3af8f1491d9c9b6921a8c61/PS3UPDAT.PUP

You must login or register to view this content.
You will need some form of storage to put this on like a USB stick for example. In this storage make the folder "PS3" then inside that make an "UPDATE" folder. Place the "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file in this folder.

You must login or register to view this content.
Connect this storage to your PS3 and go to "System Update" then select "Update via Storage Media" and go through like normal with the update.

You must login or register to view this content.
Again if you get an error telling you that "No acclicable data was found" then you need to enter the PS3's recovery menu. You can do this by following the steps below:

  1. Turn off your PS3
  2. Hold the power button down till the console turns on and off
  3. Press the power button again untill you hear two beeps
  4. Stop pressing the power button
  5. You will be asked to connect your controller and press the PS button, do this
  6. You should now be in the recovery menu

Now scroll to "System Update" at the bottom and install the firmware like normal from there.

Installing rebug custom firmware (best atm):

Download this custom firmware archive from here:
    https://www.multiupload.com/H5FD5T2K1W
You must login or register to view this content.
Once downloaded extract the archive and go inside the "Patched Firmware" folder and place the "PS3" folder on your storage and make sure you overwrite the files from the previous step. Ignore the other files they are not needed.

On restart you should see two new options in the "Game" section, these should be "/app/home/PS3_Game/" and "Install Package Files" if you do you have successfully installed custom firmware on your PS3.
