Forgive me as this is my first tutorial. Also, when doing this mod, I had no intention of doing a tutorial so I don't have pictures of all the steps (I borrowed the motherboard picture from Google). I decided to try to write a tutorial because I know there are still a few people who have surround sound receivers with only one TOSLINK input and one coaxial input and as far as I can tell the only solution was to purchase a converter which can cost upwards of $20. This cost me about $5 and was fun! This mod will add a coaxial digital audio output to the back of the PS3 to allow you to hook up all of your toys to your audio receivers.
Start by disassembling your console. Of course, I'm not going to outline that here. Next, remove the motherboard and locate the optical output. Looking at the bottom of the motherboard you will see 3 solder points at the audio output. As shown in the pic (poorly, I might add... sorry) the contact on the left is the positive connection and the one on the right is the negative. The one in the middle will be unused in this mod.

Make sure you have enough wire to route through the console and not get in the way. It doesn't really take much, but you need to make sure of where you will place your connection. Solder your wires to these contact points, making sure to remember which is positive and negative. Route your wires and drill a hole in the back of the console where your phono jack will fit. In my case, I placed mine in a nice little clear spot between the network connection and the serial number sticker as shown in these pictures.

Install your phono jack and solder the wires to it. Reassemble your console and hook up your connections and see if it works. In my case, I actually did a "proof of concept" attempt first with a salvaged phono connection from an RCA splitter and it worked on the first try. Then I went and purchased phono jacks from Radio Shack to do a permanent install and, agian, it worked on the first try without any adjustment. If you're careful about your soldering and make sure you don't short anything out, you should have no problems getting this to work. It's actually quite simple.
I apologize for the poor quality of this tutorial, but it's the only one I know of that exists. If there is enough interest I will take my console apart again and photograph the innards with a better camera and re-write this tut. The beauty of this mod is that it doesn't replace the TOSLINK output, but adds the coaxial so you end up with both (I don't think you can use both at the same time, but I haven't tried it). The reason this mod works is because the signal for both connections is the same, the difference is the TOSLINK changes it to a light beam. Good luck!
