as im sure you know when you get an update the ps3 checks the signature of the file and/or the keys used to sign it, and its this that always fails. my theory revolves around modifying the data on the hdd by means of decryption/encryption because it was speculated that if you can decrypt the data on the hdd before the update actually begins, but after the checking process, then you could in theory install anything. im trying to find out if i can think of something someone hasnt thought of yet to allow decrypting the hdd contents.
The HDD has near to no baring on updating, all the critical firmware files are stored on the NAND
