So; what up? I'm going to teach you everything there is to know about backups on the Playstation system from hard drives to the games. I'll make different sections for each thing involving backups. If you stick with me through all of this madness I can assure you that your knowledge of backups will be 10x better than it previously was.

So basically backups are copies of games that can be stored and used without the disk. Backups are made by copying them through a backup manager to the internal hard drive of the PS3 or an external hard drive. Backups can also be moved around from the PS3 to PC and so on. Not all backups are the same size. For example Portal 2 is 5GB while a Sony exclusive like God Of War III is 35GB.

Now we are on to hard drives. We need hard drives to store the backups and use them. Keeping part of hard drives is really important. The PS3 can only hold a 500GB internal hard drive. It can hold about any external hard drive size but the problem with external hard drives is that they are all NTFS OS; which the PS3 cannot detect. Do not fear as there are tools to change NTFS to FAT32 OS which is recognizable by the PS3.

There are many tools out there but I recommend GUI Format. I have used it on about 3-4 external hard drives and it has never failed me. What it does is that it formats your external hard drive to FAT32 with just a click.

To use this tool you need to do the following.

4. Hit Start and sit back.

Note: During the end it will stay at like 99.9% just don't do anything as this part is very vital and if interrupted will corrupt your hard drive. Wait until it says Close instead of stop. Also toggle the quick format if you need it.

Congrats, Your hard drive is now compatible with your PS3. The next problem is big files. Games with files over 4GB are unplayable but of course there is a fix. Use this tool called split 4g. Use this tool on the BIG FILES not the HDD itself. When you transfer the backup to your internal HDD your backup manager will merge the files.

So now lets move on to Internal Hard Drives. Internal hard drives are a bit simpler in the sense that they are just place, install, done. The do come with a few flaws. First it's the limited memory. You can get a 320GB version PS3 but that's very limited. Even if you do upgrade to a 500GB hard drive what happens when that fills up?

The importance here is that if you go with the internal hard drive you need to keep track of how much memory you have left and the size of the backups. I always like to leave at least 50GB of space just in case. Also you need to keep in mind the game data from the backups.

There really is no clear choice of which backup manager to use as all of them are all able to do the same thing. I think the real winner is multiMAN.

I especially like multiMAN because of all the constant updates that address all the issues. Also it makes things so much easier. Need to update a game? No problem. Need a file manager? Check. How about an FTP server? Yep, that's there too. Overall multiMAN takes the cake and will take care of the average user and some of the more advanced ones too.

A good method to getting games to backup is through friends. Ask some friends with PS3s if they have any games that you can borrow. Borrow them for like one day and back it up.

You can't keep L.A. Noire on your external HDD and still be able to play it. I think the only problem is big files. Use Split 4g to split files larger than 4GB and then when you play it on the PS3 the backup manager will merge the big files again. The fix only replaces the EBOOT.BIN so you should be fine on the fact that is a 3.60 game. To get the split files back together you need to copy it to the internal HDD. Find some games that are on your internal HDD that are playable on your external. Look on You must login or register to view this content. list.
