I think your inventory space is limited but you can spend upgrade points to increase it and when you get further into the game there's a storage box. Anyway, what's stopping you from doing it right in front of a vendor and sell him all your stuff right after you're done.

That may be one way for the save file to become corrupted but not the only way. Other unknown things cause it to happen also... I had 4 saves get corrupted and 2 of my friends lost theres also. Playing this game and progressing is a ticking time bomb of corruption! xD
