PS3HaX member DeViL303 has released an XMB Filemanager, which allows you to browse the entire PS3 filesystem, straight from the XMB, here is a quote from the developer: Source: You must login or register to view this content.
I have made a little XMB mod for Rebug 3.55.2 that I call XMB File Manager (XMBFM). It is a modded version of Rebug’s package manager that allows the entire ps3 filesystem to be browsed and also any files types can be seen and deleted. Im hoping to add things like copy function etc but would like to get feedback and help if anyones game?
This wont work on standard CFW for now , only on Rebug , but i will release a standard version in next few days if anyone thinks I should bother. Please like this post as it will encourage me
This is a beta version for anyone who might be interested in helping me test it or improve on it.
Install instructions: It requires you to switch 2 files from dev_flash. heres a quick tut:
- I use multiman , go to settings near the bottom of menu.
- select the mount dev_flash to dev_blind option. click enable
- next go to multiman file manager
- copy over the 2 files to thier different locations
- category_game.xml goes in dev_blind/vsh/resource/explore/xmb/
- explore_plugin_full.rco goes in dev_blind/vsh/resource/
- next disable dev_blind option in multiman
- then exit multiman to see your new XMB File Manager
This is perfectly safe and I have even tested deleting most of dev_flash before and its easy reinstall FW through recovery menu so dont worry, just make sure you are on Rebug 3.55.2, It migtht cause a error on normal 3.55CFW
Have fun and let me know if you have an ideas on how I could expand it by adding things like copy function etc. Im not the best at this so any help is much appreciated?
Big Thanks to Cyberskunk and Evilsperm (Team Rebug) for the package manager which this is based on. And also for Rebug CFW.. its my favourite!
Please before anyone flames that this is crap I did only start properly making it last night so give me a little time and maybe it will become cool. (I discovered the “exploit” that allows this back in 2010 but didnt get around to doing anything with it until now)
If anyone wants to explain an easy way of making this into a pkg file I would be delighted to hear or get some help, Im sure its not very difficult but I havnt time to figure out everything and would like this to become even more of a collaboration if anyones interested?

This has now been confirmed to work on 4.00 OFW!
"The hardware flasher is only needed to downgrade 3.55 if you're not already on 3.55. As 3.55 is the highest firmware you can install this from. If you're already on 3.55, you don't need the flasher for installation of my pup"
" Update on "Debug Settings" integration into my modified 4.00 FW:
*I've modified the xmb to act like CEX so its still usable as a retail console(the debug vsh uses different parts of the xml files so the xmb is more stripped down as it is for debugging - I patched this)Of course special debug xmb item will still be there
*The XMB use DeViL303's XMB File Manager (I had to re-port it so it would be used by the debug vsh.self) The Debug Settings in my FW are as functional as the Debug Settings in Rebug's CFW. This is because the system is not flagged as a debug console.
*There is still one major bug which I still need to find a work around - the ps3 crashes when it tries to quit any application and then requires a re-installation of the firmware(which is not good). Although pulling the power cord escapes having to re-install the firmware, it's not an appropriate fix. But on the other hand it does load games and play online. I'd appreciate to help to fix this, although I could try to find a fix myself, but two or more heads are better than one. The sooner I fix this the sooner I can release it."
Explained: So the only way to install this is via 3.55 OFW/CFW. Then after updating to OFW 4.00, it will be installed on your ps3 and it will be working. It is NOTrecommended to try this unless you have an E3/Hardware flasher which is explained above so you can downgrade back in case this does not work. This is not completed and still being worked on since there are a few problems as stated in his quote above. Remember this will NOT ALLOW you to run homebrew. And you can only downgrade from this if you have a Hardware flasher like the E3-Flasher.

This could lead to something great
Here is a video by codemovie from youtube (This isn't what DeViL303 developed, but similar, READ BELOW VIDEO)
"This video shows my modded 4.00 dev_flash, allowing the user to install retail signed package files from the XMB. This is just a convenience hack, for hardware flasher users. NOT A JAILBREAK.
I've managed to put my efforts into a .pup file, which should make the installation of my mod much easier. Download here You must login or register to view this content.
Also today while I on ps3hax.net where DeViL303 had released a beta of his XMB File Manager (substitute for Install Package Files, but a lot better) and DeViL303 theorized a FW 4.00 port was possible. So I took on the role on making the port for FW 4.00 and after posting it on that thread I integrated it into my firmware. So now I've upgraded my firmware mod and put into a .pup.
Here's some new installation instructions(much shorter, I know isn't great):
1/Be on a firmware 3.55 or less
2/Install the .pup through the XMB (Make sure you have a working hardware flasher as there is no other way to downgrade)
Remember this will NOT ALLOW you to run homebrew, it can only be installed on 3.55 or lower. And you can only downgrade from this if you have a Hardware flasher like the E3-Flasher."
DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU DONT HAVE AN E3 OR PROGSKEET, thank you. DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU DONT HAVE AN E3 OR PROGSKEET, thank you.
hmm i wonder if the old bricking trick could be revived with this. the theory was that if you can corrupt the firmware of the non downgradeable ps3 you could in theory in recovery (lv2diag etc.) return the ps3 to a lower firmware. now if this file manager has full read write access to the file system you should be able to either brick it so it doesnt know what firmware was installed or you could just copy the files from a 3.55 onto the 4.00. now i dont know if this is even possible and i dont have an e3 or progskeet installed to try this so ill leave it to a braver soul who has a hardware flasher to try this.
if anyone is brave enough and wants to try this please let us all know if it works because if it does its big news. DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU DONT HAVE AN E3 OR PROGSKEET, thank you. DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU DONT HAVE AN E3 OR PROGSKEET, thank you.
in theory i think this could work but i think you can no longer recover lv2diag.self if i recall but i could be wrong, and if there were a way to trick the ps3 into not knowing what firmware it was on is a good idea. I think if the right dev heard this idea he coulod tell you if there would be hope for it, i would try twitter and talking to uf6667 or failoverflow. See what they think about it.
Alright, thanks for clearing that up for me. I ended up trying to install it on 4.00 and the system just restarts scans for an update by itself and gives the "you have the latest update" message.
if you have the spoofed version then your ps3 thinks you have the latest FW on your ps3 i had the same problem on my other ps3
I have an old hardrive from my old phat ps3 if i were to put my hardrive im my new slim and when it asks to insert a usb with "4.00 firmware" would your modified .pup install?

I will lol. I've been trying. I don't know how my ps3 hasn't bricked yet XD.
