Customize with an save game editor? If so, then I simply misunderstood and assumed they were mules to pull items out of in-game. That is what I did for select items from other characters but when I tried with those characters I mentioned the game reported they were corrupted and could not be loaded.

Actually each character of the save file loads just fine.
The ones named "gear" are those with the best couple of equipments available for that specific class while the other ones only have a single set.
Again if the file result currupted it's because something went wrong.
And yes they can be also customized with the save editor which was posted by Viper himself some post ago.
The ros editor is very easy to use and has everything one could need. Awesome stuff indeed.
